Transport
To and From the Airport: The main airport Galeão Antônio Carlos Jobim International Airport is located 20 km away from the city centre. Santos Dumont Airport is for domestic flights and is located close to the city centre by Guanabara Bay. The bus company Real operates routes from both airports so take a look at their website for airport departures. Taxis are also a great way to commute to and from airports. * A tip, the standard yellow taxis are often half the price compared to the other taxis.
Getting around the city: Buses are an economical way to get around the city during your stay, but keep in mind that only a few key routes operate during the night. The subway is also a very useful form of transportation for tourists because they operate in the areas where the major sights can be found.
Activites and places to visit
- Copacabana and Ipanema Beach – These legendary beaches are famous for their sun filled days, sandy white beaches, beach volley ball and crystal clear waters. Make sure you get there early to get a prime location.
- Christ the Redeemer is the world famous, 40-meter tall statue of Jesus Christ. It is located 700 meters above sea level on mount Corcovado and has spectacular views over the city. The statue has been named one of the new Seven Wonders of the World.
- Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon is situated in the middle of the city, in the south zone. The Lagoon offers great views of the beaches and attracts both locals and tourists that want to go jogging or skating. Many tourists rent pedal boats to see as much of the area as possible.
- Sugar Loaf Mountains is one of Brazil’s most famous sights with a tramway to the top. Some people believe that Sugar Loaf Mountains offers an even better view than the Christ the Redeemer.
- Jardim Botanico – The botanical garden of Rio offers a wide range of plants from all over the world. There are plenty of animal species in the area, even monkeys swinging from trees. Even if you are not interested in flowers, the botanical garden is well worth a visit.
- Funicular train – catch the funicular train to the top of Mount Corcovado while experiencing the gorgeous views of the city. Make sure to be there early to avoid cues since this is a very popular tourist attraction. The train goes up to Christ the Redeemer.
- Tijuca Forest National Park – Go on a guided hiking tour through the rainforest in Tijuca Forest National Park. The rainforest is hand-planted and it is the world’s largest urban forest.
- Annual carnival of Rio – Two weeks of each year (Feb or March) the whole city turns into a party with people dancing samba all night long. The parades are definitely the most popular attractions but there are plenty of other activities during this time. If you are not lucky to be in Rio at the time for the carnival, visit the Museu do Carnaval where you can see photos from every carnival.
- Soccer game at the Maracanã. South Americas largest stadium – Even if you are not into soccer this is an experience of a life time. Make sure you go there with a guide who can tell you where to go and what areas that are not safe. The arena is currently being renovated for the World Cup but you can still visit the stadium.
- In 2014 Rio will host the FIFA World Cup and Summer Olympics 2016. If you are in the city at this time there will be plenty of other activities offered.
Nightlife
The area of Lapa will allow you to mix with the locals and experience the real nightlife of Rio. If you like to see musicians perform there are many bars in this district offering inexpensive good shows. You can find all kinds of entertainment in this area with clubs open until late in the morning. There are also plenty of samba schools in the area offering lessons for tourists.
City for kids
During a hot summer’s day, the beaches in the region attract many tourists, especially families travelling with children. The Zoo, Jardim Zoológico, is the major attraction for kids of all ages. There are only a few museums suitable for kids. The Museu do Indio is probably the best option as kids can paint their own t-shirts and participate in body painting. Keep in mind that Brazilians bring their children everywhere so all restaurants and bars will be open for children.
